Blair History from the files of Lucy Steele,
Loudon Tennessee
During the Revolution of 1688, William Blair of
Blair supported the Covenanter Party and later raised a troop of horseman
in support of the newly crowned King, William III (1688-1702). It was at
this period that a branch of the family was established in the north of
Ireland by Robert Blair, a Minister of the Gospel from Ayshire. His
decendent, Hugh Blair, is said to have left Ireland after the rebellion
and eventually settled in Pennsylvania(1746), perhaps in Lancaster County,
erected since from Cumberland County Pa. Later he moved to Guilford
County, North Carolina. This Hugh Blair, as far as we have been able to
determine, was the Progenitor of "The Blair's Ferry Blairs".
HUGH BLAIR
Hugh Blair was born in Scotland in 1706, migrated
to Ireland in 1731 and there, in 1738 married Mary Dawson, of whose family
we have no record. Hugh, Mary and their three eldest children, James, Elizabeth
and Hugh, came to America in the summer of 1746. Their daughter Jane
was born on the voyage over. They settled in Cumberland or Lancaster County,
Pa. Where three other children, Mary, John and Martha were born.
Later they came to Guilford County, N.C. Then on to Washington County,
N.C. now Washington County, Tennessee. Some have said that Hugh was engaged
in farming, others, that he was a Presbyterian Minister, However, this
seems of little consequence since, to me, either are honorable occupations
and I will only say, and I know that all of you Blairs share my opinion,
that if he was a farmer, he was a good one and if he was a Minister of
the Gospel, he furthered the Kingdom of Heaven. In The Annals of Tennessee
by J.G.M. Ramsey (page 138) we find Hugh Blair listed as on of the signers
of The Watauga Petition, which was received by the Provencial Council of
North Carolina on Aug. 22, 1776. There is no record of Mary Dawson's death
but Hugh died in Aug. 1783. No marked graves have been located for
them but it is probable that they are buried in Washington County, Tenn
